A new law, tabled by Labour MP, Harriet Harman, will remove parental rights of parents found guilty of committing sexual offences against children.

The proposed amendment follows a case in Cardiff Family Court in which the mother of the child successfully argued that the child’s father having parental rights and contact with the child, was not in the child’s best interests.

Terminating a parent’s rights is a very serious issue and needs careful consideration by the Court.  In this matter, the Court clearly felt the benefit of terminating the father’s rights outweighed any implications that may follow.

Journalist coverage of this ground-breaking case was permitted through the Transparency Pilot, which allows journalists to report family courts in a meaningful way for the first time. This pilot covers almost half the family courts in England and Wales.
